The 2011 Four Nations Tournament was a great success, with teams being more evenly matched than in 2010. Never the less, the culmination was a familiar but deserved Australian victory, this time over England, in a sell out final at Elland Road. The competition now takes a break until 2014. Despite this, England coach Steve McNamara has been promised a full international programme in 2012. On the international development scene, further small but important steps are being taken to spread the game. Ukraine became an affiliated member of the RLIF, bringing the number of European RL playing nations up to 15. Fledgling organisations are also working hard to establish the game in Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore and structures are being put in place for a more organised international callendar.

Super League XVI proved to be one of the most entertaining since the competition started. Wigan and Warrington made the early pace, but several other teams, including the Dragons, Giants and Tigers, gave their supporters reason to be optimistic. Warrington eventually finished as league leaders but Leeds and St. Helens refused to read the script and contested the Grand Final. Both teams contributed to an enthralling match before The Rhinos were crowned worthy Champions. Wigan took the Challenge Cup, beating Leeds in another entertaining game. Widnes Vikings were announced as the newest members of Super League in March. Celtic Crusaders' withdrawal from the license process for 2012 - 2015 was a massive shock, leaving all other Super League clubs secure, at least for the immediate future.

Manly were deservedly crowned NRL champions. After showcasing a consistent and all-round style of play all season, they went on to take the Premiership against the Warrriors. Melbourne Storm regrouped and almost came out on top again and the Broncos couldn't quite give Darren Lockyer a glorious final swan song. The Titans crashed from a top four slot in 2010 to take 2011's wooden spoon. In 2012, can The Sea Eagles be the first club to win back-to-back championships in 20 years?

Featherstone Rovers went one better than the previous year. Finishing the season as league leaders, they went on to thrash Sheffield Eagles in the Grand Final. In the Northern Rail Cup, Leigh and Halifax produced a real thriller of a final before Leigh finally won the day. Barrow had three points deducted for irregularities and were subsequently docked a further 29 points and relegated after systematic salary cap breaches were proven. Toulouse Olympique's three year stay in the Championship also came to an end after they decided to return to the French Elite competition. With Widnes also leaving, the Championship mirrored Super League with all remaining clubs secure from relegation in a slimmed down Championship for 2012.

Swinton, led by Steve McCormack, were front runners almost from the word go and won the league and automatic promotion to The Championship. Keighley fought their way through to the Grand Final and earned an immediate return to The Championship by defeating a rejuvenated Workington Town. Championship 1 will have an interesting mix of teams for the 2012 season which may not be recreated for some time. Many "derbies", including all three Cumbrian clubs; Oldham and Rochdale; and the hugely anticipated "north v south" game between the re-formed North Wales Crusaders and the South Wales Scorpions, promise some partisan and excellent games ahead. Add in four promotion slots, due to the expansion of the division and you have all the ingredients for a cracking season!
