The club received news of the set-back earlier this week, as the prop has asked to be released from his contract due citing family reasons.
Crusaders’ coach John Dixon said: “Ben will not be joining the Crusaders for next season. As a player, he was excited about the opportunity offered to him, but in making his final decision based on his family's priorities, this meant that remaining in Australia was best for him.

CLOSE season loan signing Gareth Moore has been sent back to Leeds by Halifax due to concerns about a back injury.
The teenage halfback turned down several other clubs to agree a 12-month deal at the Shay after impressing for the Rhinos reserves, and was touted as a possible replacement for the departed Graham Holroyd.

But Moore has struggled with pre-season training, and medical investigations have now revealed a back problem.

"Part of our pre-season training is a very intensive testing programme for all our players, and this has highlighted a problem with Gareth's back," said Fax chief executive Graham Clay.

"It's been hampering his track work, and after discussing it with Leeds we agreed the best course of action is for him to return to Headingley and allow the Rhinos medical staff to supervise his treatment and recovery.

"We are disappointed for Gareth because he is very enthusiastic and desperately wants to play for Halifax.

" We haven't ruled out him coming back to us, but that will depend on how long he is sidelined for.

"It may take a few weeks, or it could be several months. Once we know that the coaching staff will decide whether there is a place in the squad for him or not.

"This shows that our player performance and monitoring systems are working. It's far better to spot problems at an early stage."

The 19-year-old, who can play in either half back position, was a regular starter in Leeds' under 21 side last term and has been a prolific points scorer at junior level for his home town club, though he has yet to make his first team bow for the Headingley outfit.

He was close to joining Fax in thge summer only to pick up a hand injury which put the move on hold.

The news is a blow for coach Matt Calland's plans but he still has the likes of Ben Black, Bob Beswick, Mick Govin and Dwayne Barker vying for the stand off spot.

FANS are reminded that the 2009 shirt launch takes place at Liquid nightclub on Friday, December 12.

Admission is free for season tickets holders, and £3 for everyone else. As well as the unveiling of the new home and away shirts, the club will announce players squad numbers and formally introduce all the new signings.

The club have also confirmed they are planning an official VIP supporters trip to their away fixture in Toulouse.

The package includes flying with the team from Manchester on Friday, July 17 and returning on the evening of Sunday, July 19t, plus two nights bed and breakfast at the team hotel.

As seats will be limited to just 50 places, anyone interested is asked to contact the club as soon as possible on 01422 342792.

HORNETS have been served with a winding up order for £55,000 by the Inland Revenue with the case due to be heard at the High Court in London on 14 January.

The club’s total debt is £190,000 and is made up of £150,000 to the Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise plus £40,000 to local suppliers.

The news was broken to shareholders at a special meeting held at Spotland on Monday night. And, while the situation is serious, the board believe that with the help and support of shareholders they can overcome the problem. They have enlisted the help of accounts firm Archwood Accountants, Middleton, who are specialists in the field.

Mike Obertelli from the firm explained: "We have to confirm the liabilities that are outstanding and approach the Inland Revenue to try and buy some time. The club will be wound up on 14 January if something is not done. We would be looking for any specific pledges that could be made to the club to be put to the Revenue. As we stand at the moment the debt to the Inland Revenue and the Customs and Excise stands at £150,000. In addition to that there are trade suppliers owed £40,000. And unless we can raise some money in pledges and buy time with the Revenue or a combination of both there’s not a lot we can do."

Hornets commercial manager Debbie Troops confirmed that an action plan was in place to take the club forward and, that if the outcome of the meeting was positive, she was confident the club could move forward.

Chief executive Ken Oldham, who has a long association with the club, also felt that if shareholders and fans rally round the problems can be overcome. He said: "I think there are a lot of positives to come out of the meeting. I think the shareholders are very good, they raised some issues and the board has come in for some criticism, probably justified. But we are putting a new team in place, we have had some very generous offers of money already and we are quite confident we will go forward.

"I am sure we can avoid the winding up order with the help of the new accountants. They have expertise in that area. We are confident they will pilot us through it and we will come out the other side and have a team on the pitch next season. It’s not just on the field, though, that Hornets are moving forward. I think the office team are excellent and have Matt Gartland and Darren Shaw both working in the community," he added. "We have education packs in place and we are doing more in schools now than we have ever done and that can only be good for the long term future of the club."

Mr Oldham then lodged a final appeal for help to keep the club – formed in 1871 and an integral part of the town – afloat, and he acknowledged the contribution of directors past and present.

"Anyone who can help is very welcome. No amount is too small and anyone who can offer any cash to Hornets will have our eternal gratitude. We are going to get hold of shareholders who haven’t been able to make the meeting and hope they will be able to help. But we have a few signing up with Debbie pledging money. Going back a step I would like to thank David Vining and Norman Halsall for their help, and Martin Shenton and Karen Reynolds who invested around £200,000 in the club and that is a huge chunk of money. But the club can’t always rely on the directors."

Hallo everyone,
My name is Jason. I am born and breed in Aotearoa New Zealand but have been living in The Netherlands for the last 2 and a half years. Most people ask me why the hell would you leave NZ to live in Holland and I must admit I ask myself that same question. My father is dutch and I have a NZ and a Nederland passport and I originally came to Holland to play League for the national side. The first season was good fun as the Nederlands Rugby League got many opportunities to play at an international level but due to unknown circumstances the relationship between us (Nederlands Rugby League) and the RLEF has fallen over and we were then told we are not allowed to play anymore internationals and no international team is allowed to play us. WHY?!
Your guess is as good as mine but what I do know is that we(Holland) are a country that was in the middle of growing interest for the sport of Rugby League and are know cut off from the rest of the world and that hurts. We are a nation struggling as it is to promote a new sport in a football crazed nation with little or no Budget and now we feel we are being kicked in the ribs while we are down. I am trying my best with the help of a few others to try and salvage what we have got but I feel we have been dealt a very crappy hand and would appreciate any guidance, ideas and help that might help get Rugby League in The Nederlands on the agenda again and then people like me who have been forced to play Rugby Union as they have no other option may get a chance to play the sport they love (RUGBY LEAGUE) once again. So any Help would be appreciated.

P.S. good on the Kiwi's. World Champions. One of the most proudest moments for any Kiwi Rugby League player and fan.

THE clock is creeping towards 7pm as sleek, black convertibles and 4WDs purr into an undercover car park.

Each vehicle contains a lone male driver, all of whom wear business attire and determined faces.
They stride across to a small lift that travels upward four floors to a plain boardroom.

It overlooks the home straight of Rosehill racecourse, which is fitting given the whips have started to crack in the mad rush for control of the Parramatta Eels Football Club.

Less than a fortnight remains until election day and the rebels seeking to oust CEO Denis Fitzgerald are ready to make their final dash.

There are already more than a dozen dissidents in the sun-drenched boardroom when The Daily Telegraph arrives for an exclusive insight into their preparations.
Related Links

Sitting in a row on the far side of the table are the three Eels legends who hope to revolutionise their club after 30 years under Fitzgerald's rule.

Previously pictured in Blundstones and work shirts, Ray Price and Eric Grothe have changed into buttoned-up and windsor-knotted clobber. Brett Kenny, who won four premierships alongside the pair, is dressed in similar fashion.

The adjacent four figures are the men selected to join them on the official seven-man rebel ticket. To Kenny's right is Bob Gare, a former police sergeant who recently retired after 27 years of service to the force. Next is John Chidiac and Robert Sassen, two prominent local property developers.

Last of all is Ken Lawless, who works in the financial sector. But there are many more names working for the rebel cause than the seven that will appear on the December 14 ballot paper.

Most were there on Monday night - 1986 Grand Final hero Terry Leabeater, long-time Eels sponsor and restaurateur Mario Libertini, Dr Graham Malouf, solicitor Daniel Essey, printer Joe Saad and businessman Colin Green.

Leabeater wanted to run on the ticket, but a dispute over his membership means the former prop is now settling for an advisory role.

"We only get one chance at this,'' Leabeater tells the meeting. "We've got to get on the front foot and tell people what we stand for. There's no more time to die wondering.''

The next two hours are a frenzy of ideas and debate as the all-important documents to be mailed to members this week are finalised. The platforms are transparency, unity and, after 22 long years, another premiership.

On transparency, Price says: "We are one of the biggest, most popular clubs in Australia and we have just over 600 members. That's pathetic. More should be done to attract members and give them more information about the club.

"As it stands, they pay their subscription, get an annual report every December and hear nothing else.''

At present, the football club only controls the Eels' Harold Matthews, SG Ball and junior teams. But should they win, the rebels will look closely at reclaiming the NRL side from the leagues club, which took it over after an extraordinary vote in 2001.

The one thing everyone understands is the enormity of their task. The incumbent board has not maintained power for so long without strength of numbers.

Of the 669 members who are entitled to vote, the rebels conservatively concede that 150 are already in Fitzgerald's keeping.

"That means the only people that matter are the other 500,'' Kenny says. "We have to convince as many as possible to get there and vote (because there are no proxies).''

The rebels decide to ask the football club for members to present personal ID with their badges on the day to ensure there are no identity disputes. They also want a guarantee that current NRL players who can vote will be free to attend.

There's no shortage of conspiracy theories about the veracity of previous elections, particularly the 1992 vote when 20 ballots were mysteriously lost. Fitzgerald last night declined an opportunity to argue the imcumbents' case for re-election.

BULLDOGS star Reni Maitua has today been sacked from the Belmore club after he failed to attend training on Monday and failed to offer any explanation for his absence.

After tolerating a string of incidents involving the 25-year-old, frustrated Bulldogs officials decided to terminate the final year of his contract.

Maitua has previously missed twice, and also had his licence suspended for drink driving. After being dropped to reserve grade two weeks into last season for his previous no-show, the former Australian lock was given his last warning.

Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenberg and new coach Kevin Moore have vowed to return discipline to Belmore after six drama-plagued seasons, a promise they delivered on by sacking the errant Maitua.

“We’ve decided to terminate Reni’s contract for repeated breaches of the club’s code of conduct,’’ Greenberg said. “It’s not the first time something like this has happened and we simply can’t put up with it any more.

“Reni was under no illusions as to the standards expected of Bulldogs players and he failed to meet them.

“Despite repeated attempts to assist Reni over the years he has left us with no choice but to end his time with the Club. It is an incredibly disappointing situation for everyone involved.”

Should he choose to do so, Maitua will have 48 hours to appeal the breach notice. In a press release issued this afternoon the club said it would offer Maitua the use of a counselling service to help him work through his options for the future.

THE North Queensland Cowboys have announced they've signed New Zealand Warriors halfback Grant Rovelli for the next two NRL seasons. Rovelli fell out of favour with the Warriors this year and, with the club recruiting Stacey Jones and Joel Moon for 2009, he faced a season in reserve grade.

But the Cowboys today snapped up the Mackay-born player as an extra attacking option in the halves.

"Grant will give us the depth in the halves we have been looking fo r," Cowboys general manager of football Dean Lance said.
"After playing in the last two finals series for the Warriors we have no doubt he will be an asset for us.
"We are delighted to have a North Queensland junior returning home."

HALIFAX rugby league star Dave Larder is used to having a safe pair of hands.
But when his wife Jaime gave birth to their baby daughter Josie Ann at 2am on the bedroom floor, the Fax second-row forward had to make the most important catch of his life.

Dave, a 15-stone stalwart of the rugby league side, leapt into action, collecting towels and ringing for an ambulance before delivering the 8lb baby himself and placing her into Jaime's arms.

Speaking from home with his family – and the new arrival – at Highburton, near Huddersfield, he told the Courier of the night he will never forget.

He said: "We have a saying in our family, that whatever life throws up, you just have to get on with it.

"And it was certainly the case that night.

"Looking back, none of us can believe how it happened.

"I've never done anything like that before, but the offers to be a midwife have flooded in since.

"I don't know what the lads at the club have got in store for me when I get back to training but I guess it will be something special."

Dave, 32, was fast asleep in bed at when Jaime, his partner of 14 years said her waters broke.

He quickly rang the hospital, lay her down on some towels on the floor and waited for paramedics to arrive.

But with the ambulance still looking for their house, Jaime suddenly began needing to push.

Dave said: "As she was pushing, I could see the top of the baby's head.

"It dawned on me and I turned to Jaime and just said 'It's me and you now.'

"The woman on the phone told me how to put my fingers between the umbilical cord and the neck - then the next push, she was out.

"I just held her out to Jaime's chest and we sat there until the ambulance arrived.

"The midwife checked everything out, said congratulations and told me there was a job for me if I ever wanted.

"It's always going to be special, but how it happened is just incredible and is still sinking in."

Dave, who joined Fax five years ago, has been given a week off training since the birth on November 23 and is relaxing at home with Josie Ann, Jaime and their three-year-old son Freddie Lewis.

Jaime, 31, said: "Dave's always been a good man in a crisis and I wouldn't have wanted for anybody else to be there.

"When he held the baby up to my chest with us both on the bedroom floor it was really surreal - but it was a lovely moment."

Helen Shallow, head of midwifery at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, said: "Well done to Jaime for all her hard work but fantastically well done to Dave for keeping them safe."

HALIFAX will launch both their Northern Rail Cup and Co-operative Championship programmes with home games in 2009.
Blackpool Panthers are due at the Shay on Sunday February 8 in the group stages of the former competition while Widnes Vikings will be the first league opponents for Matt Calland's men on Sunday March 22.

Halifax will be confident of progressing from the group stages of the Northern Rail Cup having been drawn in a section with Blackpool and Hunslet, who both struggled in National League Two last season, promoted Barrow and a Sheffield side who finished four places below them this summer.

The sides will meet only once, unlike last year when Halifax played Workington, Keighley and Whitehaven home and away.

Halifax topped Group One before losing in the knockout stages to Celtic Crusaders, who went on to register a league double over Calland's side en route to winning a controversial Super League franchise.

Fax chief executive Graham Clay said: "With all respect to the opposition we expect to do well in the Northern Rail Cup group and progress."

He said that the games against Blackpool and Hunslet represented good winning opportunities. Barrow had recruited well but the fact that Halifax didn't have to travel to Cumbria was a bonus while Sheffield would be a tough place to go for the final group match.

The match against Sheffield will give new capture Rob Worrincy an early return to the Don Valley Stadium while Bob Beswick will go head to head with his former Widnes teammates in Fax's opening league game.

Clay said: "The Widnes match is a bit of a blockbuster and it wouldn't surprise me if they wanted this game for Sky TV - to us it certainly looks the pick of the fixtures.

"Many pundits seem to be predicting that us and Widnes will by vying for top spot come the end of the season. Hopefully this fixture will excite the fans as well."

Widnes's trip to the Shay will actually be on the second weekend of Championship action - Fax sit out the opening round of fixtures in an 11-team competition.

Clay said: "We are hoping for a good Northern Rail Cup run and then we will have a week off to get over the bumps and bruises."

Fax will head to competition newcomers Toulouse on July 18 and Clay revealed that the club was planning VIP trips for fans to travel with the players for the game at the start of the traditional holiday season.

"The players are excited about the chance of a weekend away and to play on foreign soil," said Clay.

The return game against the French side is the last match of the regular programme on September 5.

Clay added: "Overall we are pleased with the fixture list and the way the cards have been dealt.

"It should certainly be an interesting season.

A PROPOSED link with engage Super League side Huddersfield Giants could keep Batley Bulldogs' fringe players match-fit. Bulldogs boss Gary Thornton admitted he is concerned over the club's decision not to run a reserve grade side next season.

"That is pretty much decided," said Thornton, whose team finished ninth out of 10 in Co-op National One last season. It puts a bit of pressure on us, because we have got a small squad as it is. We are looking at forging some links with Huddersfield Giants that might give us the ability to play some of our fringe players in their reserve team. That's not been confirmed yet, it is still very much up in the air."

The decision to run without a second-string has been taken for financial reasons and budget pressures have also restricted Bulldogs' off-season recruitment.

Thornton has brought in second-row Nathan Armitage and hooker George Flanagan from Bradford Bulls, centre Dale Cardoza from Leigh Centurions and ex-Leeds Academy prop/back-rower David Tootill, from Harlequins.

But he said: "We have probably finished squad-wise. I don't think we'll be getting any more signings in, because we are pretty much up to the budget. I think we will be going what we have got, into the start of the Northern Rail Cup. I would have liked a couple more, but the budget means we can't do it."

Spring-heeled winger Jermaine McGilivray has returned to Bulldogs on loan from Huddersfield, after impressing during a similar stint last season.

"He'll be with us for the season," said Thornton. "He is doing his pre-season with Huddersfield and he will join us in February."

Bulldogs are also giving trials to Australian prop Mark Chandler and loose-forward Luke Kemp, who played for Dewsbury Celtic in Co-op Conference National last summer.

Hooker Kris Lythe and former Leeds Rhinos Academy forward James Archibald are both expected to miss the start of Bulldogs' Northern Rail Cup campaign.

Thornton said: "They both might need surgery. Kris is waiting for the results of a scan on his knee. It's looking very likely he is going to need some corrective surgery. It's a similar situation with James, but hopefully they won't miss too much of the season. Other than that, we have pretty much a fully-fit squad. We have been in training for three weeks and it has gone really well."

Players who have left since last season are Kevin King, who has retired and Featherstone Rovers-bound Tim Spears.

KIWI legend Robbie Paul is set to add his vast experience at hooker to what is possibly the biggest and most formidable pack in Salford's history.

The Reds will be fielding one of the strongest packs in Super League with a combined weight close on 100 stone.

Paul will combine the hooking duties with skipper Mal Alker.

Coach Shaun McRae has been working on a plan to combine their talents and he believes Paul will give Salford a further boost.

McRae reckons he will have the ability to carry on the initial good work of Alker with his breaks from dummy half and his ability to prise open a defence.

It will enable Alker to double up as a second rower and together they will strengthen the spine of what is a very strong looking squad.

Football director Steve Simms says careful attention has been spent making sure the Reds are competitive in the forwards on their return to the top flight.

"Matches are won in the forwards, it's in the pack where you set the platform and this is where you have to have proven quality," he said.

"Both Alker and Paul will have key roles to play. We're pleased with how the squad is shaping up.

"Aussie Craig Stapleton is an extremely strong and powerful front rower. He was the best player in National League One last season and, in my view, Super League will suit him down to the ground.

"The last time he played at this level for Leigh, he stood out and when he went back to Australia he took his game up to the next level.

"Stapleton has got better and better. Alker alongside him will always be a leader; he can pull something out when the chips are down.

"We've also brought in Ray Cashmere who has had a terrific season with the North Queensland Cowboys.

"Ray's presence will further strengthen us because he's a strapping six footer - a rangy kind of player, who makes good ground and will take the ball up all day.

"Luke Swain will be coming in from Australia. He's very experienced and won a grand final with Penrith. I feel he is tailor-made for Super League."

Simms is confident that some of the stars of last season will cope comfortably with the step up to Super League.

"We also know what we get from Phil Leuluai who is a typically tough uncompromising forward. Phil is a handful for any team. We certainly have plenty of competition across the board in the pack," he said.

"Ian Sibbit will be looking for a very big season. He was outstanding last season; he managed to steer clear of injury and is a quality forward who always gives 100 per cent.

"Lee Jewitt has bags of talent and will be keen to make his mark, so too will be Luke Adamson who was very consistent last year and we all know what Jordan Turner is capable of.

"Nowadays, you have to be extremely strong up front, forwards have to be powerful and mobile. We fee we have this.

"We're eagerly awaiting the start of the season and feel we could surprise one or two teams. We have good competition for places.

"We've also got players who can play in a variety of positions. This is vital and I'm sure we're going to play a brand of very good rugby."

Keighley Cougars have signed Australian halfback Daniel Evans on a one-year contract.

Daniel, 24, comes from Australia’s Gold Coast; he was a halfback with Tweed Head Seagulls who play in the Queensland Cup competition and is a dual-contract player with National Rugby League Club Gold Coast Titans.

He has been signed by the Cougars following discussions with their head coach Barry Eaton who has been in Australia for a family holiday and to watch the Rugby League World Cup.

Daniel said: “It has been an ambition of mine to play Rugby League in England at some stage in my career and this is a great opportunity for me. I met Barry Eaton in Australia and I’m looking forward to working with both him and the Cougars players.”

Daniel has played representative Rugby League for Gold Coast and Northern Rivers in the Country Rugby League. He also played club rugby for Brisbane’s Wynnum Manly.

And Daniel has already been briefed about what he can expect from British Rugby League. He said: “Some of my mates have been playing with British clubs and they have told me about the game over here.

“They have said that playing standards have improved and that it’s really enjoyable”.

Cougars now have two Australian players on their books and Daniel joins prop forward Brendon Rawlins from Townsville, Queensland on the Cougars staff.

Daniel will link up with his new teammates for the first time when the Cougar players report back for their pre-season training on Tuesday, December 2.

Barry Eaton said: “It is always good to acquire quality players for the Cougars squad. We have set ourselves tough targets for 2009 and we shall need an in-depth squad for what is expected to be an exacting campaign. Daniel comes to Keighley well recommended and I’m sure he will be a success with our club”.

There will be no need for the Cougar players to try too hard to find Daniel a nickname because he has arrived at the club with one already in place. He was known as ‘Farmer’ when he played for the Seagulls!

And there is a tradition of having somebody called ‘Farmer’ at the Cougars because that was the nickname of the club’s former grounds man David Marshall who has just retired after ten years at Cougar Park.

And as an added bonus Daniel’s partner Michelle will be starting work with one of the Cougar club partners Fitness First. Michelle is a fitness trainer and is also an accomplished touch rugby player having represented Queensland in the sport.
