North Wales Crusaders are delighted to announce a new six-figure Radio, Press and Online TV deal, which will see the club promoted via Wales' biggest commercial radio station Real Radio, North Wales biggest newspaper The Daily Post and online TV with Rugby video specialist InVision Communications.
The partnership with Real Radio Wales continues their support of Rugby League in the region following their sponsorship of the Crusaders Super League club last year. The deal will see home games promoted with commercials and on-air competitions, with the station becoming ‘top-of-shirt' sponsor and branding at the Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium.
Chief Executive of North Wales Crusaders, Jamie Thomas commented "We always viewed getting Rugby League back on air with Real Radio Wales as essential to our success. The support they've shown to the new club has been fantastic and they've really bought into our ideas of knitting Rugby League into the fabric of North Wales, with an ambitious plan of community activity planned for 2012. Long may this agreement continue."
Tony Dowling, Managing Director of Real Radio Wales said "We are delighted to be partnering the new North Wales Crusaders for the coming season. Together, we make a great team!"
The radio campaign will be backed up by weekly marketing in the Daily Post, North Wales biggest newspaper, continuing their association with the sport since Crusaders RL moved up to Wrexham from Bridgend.
To complete the media agreements for 2012, North Wales Crusaders have signed up with Rugby specialist InVision Communications, to provide online TV content to include promotional material and behind the scenes footage as the club complete their first season in Championship One.
"To have such a fantastic media deal is something any Super League club would be proud of, let alone Championship One. To have Wales' biggest commercial radio station Real Radio on board, backed up by North Wales number one newspaper and an innovative new online content partner is going reap massive rewards for the success of Rugby League in North Wales. I think it sends out a statement about how serious we are about building this new outfit into a truly successful club for the long term."

The 36-year-old former Halifax and Huddersfield player, who was England's hooker in the 2000 World Cup, has been in temporary charge of the Championship club since the departure of Ian Millward to Castleford at the end of last season.

Rowley's appointment, on a two-year contract, follows difficulties in obtaining a work visa for ex-Leeds and New Zealand centre Richie Blackmore, the man lined up to replace Millward.

Leigh chairman Keith Freer said the club still hope to appoint a general manager, who is expected to be Blackmore.

"The delay in appointing the general manager due to the problems with the UK Border Agency has meant that it would be in the interests of the first team that this appointment be made now and alleviate the uncertainty which was starting to evolve," Freer said.

"This appointment reflects the significant work that has been undertaken by Paul and the existing coaching staff in the development of the squad and the recent performances."

Rowley has guided the Centurions to wins over Salford and Wigan in pre-season friendlies and will take charge of their opening match against Barrow in their defence of the Northern Rail Cup on Sunday week.

MELBOURNE, Bangkok and Abu Dhabi are just a few of the far-flung destinations die-hard Vikings fans will be returning to Widnes from to be at the club’s historic first match back in Super League.

A trio of super-fans will complete a combined round trip of more than 40,000 miles to watch the eagerly awaited game against Wakefield.

Other international fans are understood to be flying if from Benidorm, Holland, Germany and Barcelona, while hundreds of others will be travelling from all corners of the UK.

Ged Unsworth, 58, a Widnes fan since birth, is making the trip from South Australia, and says he would not miss the match for the world.

He told the Weekly News: “I leave Melbourne on Wednesday evening and arrive at 10am on Thursday. With a time adjustment of 11 hours, it will take me 28 hours to get to Widnes. But I just had to get back for this game. Steve O’Connor has done the town proud. The way the man has handled everything to do with this club is a true testament to the spirit of Widnes people.

“He has taken the blows, ignored the scoffs, proven the nay-sayers wrong and done so with his head held high. It promises to be a fantastic night.”

Marcus Booth, another Widnes-born fan, currently works in Thailand but is jetting in especially for the match.

He said: “I have to be there simply to say thank you to Steve O’Connor. He has done so much for this club, this is my way of repaying him, Julie Gaskell, Denis Betts, Paul Cullen and all of the staff and players for making this piece of history possible.

“I fly back to Bangkok on Sunday but it is great to be back in the big time.”

Current Abu Dhabi resident Martin Graeber is travelling 6,940 miles and will be in England for only 48 hours.

He said: “I am really looking forward to showing the world just how far the club has come. It was a game that I couldn’t miss.

“I think we will hold our own this year and hopefully surprise a few people along the way. It will be hard, there is no doubt, but sneaking into the play-offs is possible.”

Stuart Jones is back with his first previews of 2012 Super League season and our man reckons their could be opening successes for two west Yorkshire teams...

After an absence of seven years the Widnes Vikings return to superleague on Friday night. In front of the TV cameras and playing on their new-fangled I-pitch they will be keen to get away to a good start. However, team news doesn't bode well for them.

I said in my season preview that I expected the new surface to benefit the Vikings, and I stand by that, but what I didn't see coming was the absentees in Dennis Betts' 19 man squad. Anthony Watts may in fact be the second coming, if he behaves himself for long enough, but he can't do a thing to help Widnes if he's injured. The home side are also without Shaun Briscoe, Paddy Flynn, Cameron Phelps, Sione Kite and Ben Davies, which already puts them deep into the reserves in some positions.

The two sides look really hard to split now. Wakefield are missing far less key men than their opposition and, on paper, it now looks as if the Wildcats side has the edge. Richard Agar's squad is just about a full strength one, which means their maverick half-back, Tim Smith, should start.

It's very much a guessing game here with two teams who have faced an off-season overhaul coming together for the first game, but this match promises to be even closer than the market suggests and I have to side with Wakefield getting a couple of points start on the handicap.

Steve McCormack won’t be signing players just to make up the numbers.

The Swinton coach has admitted he needs to bolster his squad before the start of the Northern Rail Cup at York on Sunday, February 12.

He has been in contact with Super League clubs with a view to bringing players in on loan or on dual-registration.

He said: “We just need to add a little bit of quality and a few more numbers to the team because one thing we have not got at the moment is competition for places.

“It’s obviously very early and we haven’t even started the season but we need to have players fighting for the jerseys.

“Hopefully we will do that soon.

“I’ve been in discussion with a few Super League clubs. Like us they have completed their pre-season games and once they have sorted their squads out and named their first team line-ups for next week we will know a little bit more.

“But we don’t just want to bring numbers in, we want players who are going to have an impact on the club.

“Even though we are short on numbers I will take my time and bring the right people in.”

Castleford have had their ups and downs since the Super League era began in 1996… quite literally.
They have been relegated twice from the league but have since bounced back to maintain a comfortable and consistent mid table position.
However in the final season of the last millennium, Castleford did the unthinkable and came from within 80 minutes of Old Trafford shocking two well established clubs.
Having finished in the fifth and final play off spot after the 1999 regular season, the extra match looked to be a case of seeing out the inevitable before the Tigers could go on holiday. But Stuart Raper had other ideas.
To really put the Tigers up against the wall, their first Super League play off game would be held at the brand new JJB Stadium against Wigan. The Warriors had just moved out of Central Park, and were expected to be welcomed into their new home with a guaranteed win that would progress them into the next round.
But it would be the first time Wigan finished a season without any silverware since 1984, as Castleford won 14-10. But Stuart Raper’s side hadn’t finished prowling yet.
Raper led his side to Headingley, where Brad Godden, Marc Glanville and coach Graham Murray were set to make their Leeds farewells.
The Tigers certainly didn’t mind ruining the occasion for the departing trio as Dean Sampson, and eventual Man of Steel winner Adrian Vowels, all ensured Castleford raced to a 14-2 lead by half time. Aaron Raper sealed the man of the match award due to his efforts in the early minutes of the game.
But the previous year’s Grand Finalists had got to Old Trafford for a reason, and fought their way back into the game.
Two Iestyn Harris penalties launched the Leeds scoring, and eventually Francis Cummings got the Rhinos first try.
Less than five minutes later Cummings scored another, and it looked like the Tigers had been sent to sleep as Harris levelled the scores with his second conversion.
Danny Orr’s earlier penalties for the Tigers meant the scores were tied at 16-all going into the last ten minutes.
Orr had a chance to put Castleford back in the lead, but his penalty drifted wide, however Raper shortly landed a crucial drop goal.
But there was still seven minutes left to play, however the Castleford defence was on form preventing Leeds from exiting their own half.
The pressure finally took its toll on the Rhinos with four minutes left. Keith Senior dropped an easy pass which gave Darren Rogers the chance to take advantage. He raced away only to be tracked down by a chasing Leeds defence.
But Dale Fritz was in support, and after Rogers was allowed to play the ball quickly, Fritz crossed for the Tigers to send them to the Final Eliminator play off.
After the jubilations of the previous two weeks, Castleford came back down to earth with a bump.
They were to face St Helens at Knowsley Road, and Saints showed the Tigers what it takes to become a champion side. They defeated Castleford 36-6 before going onto face league leaders Bradford in a thrilling 8-6 Grand Final, which Saints won.

Injury-hit Catalan Dragons have signed former Hull KR hooker Ben Fisher on loan from Championship side Batley for the first two months of the season.

Fisher, 30, will provide cover for regular Catalan hooker Ian Henderson following injuries to Eloi Pelissier and captain Gregory Mounis.

"After injuries to Eloi and Greg, we needed an experienced hooker to partner Ian," said coach Trent Robinson.

"Batley were understanding and very helpful in the process."

He added: "I value Ben's ethic and know he will settle quickly into our system."

Hooker Pelissier faces an eight-week lay-off after breaking his jaw in last Saturday's friendly against London Broncos, while loose forward Mounis suffered cartilage damage and is out for a month.

In addition, Frédéric Vaccari is now sidelined for several months after tearing his cruciate ligament against the Broncos, while fellow winger Cyril Stacul suffered a broken ankle.

The Australian-born Scotland international, who made 124 Super League appearances in five seasons for Hull KR, joined Championship club Batley after being released by Rovers at the end of last season.

But, even before he has made his competitive debut for Batley, Builldogs coach John Kear has allowed him a temporary return to Super League.

Fisher, who was due to arrive in Perpignan this Sunday, turns 31 the day before a likely debut in the Dragons' Super League opener against Bradford next Sunday (5 February).

North Wales Crusaders 50-22 Rochdale Hornets

North Wales Crusaders made it two wins out of two as the newly formed club as they beat under-strength Rochale Hornets 50-22 at the Racecourse.
It was the home side that started the brightest and it took them just three minutes to open the scoring through Andrew Oakden. A high kick into the corner from captain Mosedale was collected by Oakden, who then ran in to score the try. The home side could have extended their lead just minutes later too, but Chris Tyrer squandered the chance and knocked on close to the line.
The visitors did make the most of their opportunities when they came though and Will Chadwick collected a dropped ball by Hulme to score their opening try. Crusaders did retain their lead and it was Anthony Morison who deserved all the credit for the score. A fantastic out-the-back offload set up Rob Massam to ground in the corner. Rochdale took the lead for the first time four minutes later though, as Dean Gorton made his way through the Crusaders’ defence far too easily and later converted his own try.
The home side took the lead again through captain Andy Mosedale, as following earlier close efforts, he had too much power for the Hornets defence and pushed his way through to score underneath the sticks. Crusaders had their strong defence to thank for the field position from which they scored their fourth try, as they forced a Rochdale knock on just twenty metres from the line. Massam grabbed his second try of the afternoon, as Leon Brennan’s offload sent him over the line.
The lead was increased just minutes into the second half, as Mosedale intercepted a pass to run home from 60 metres to score his second try. The tries continued in free flow, this time through Leon Brennan. A run was made from within his own half of the field and Brennon finished the move off in the left corner.
The visitors pulled two tries back in quick succession through Craig Johnson and Gary Middlehurst though. A Steven Roper pass was almost intercepted but the Crusaders defence couldn’t stop the ball falling to Johnson who went in for a simple try in the corner. Rochdale pulled the deficit back to just eight points with the second, as a knock-on from Jono Smith just inches from the line allowed Gary Middlehurst in for a try.
North Wales Crusaders then ran in four more tries before the end of the game. Continuous pressure from the Crusaders forced a goal-line drop out and from the next set of play Lee Hudson threw an offload to Owain Griffiths who ran over for Crusaders’ seventh try of the day. A fourteen point lead then became eighteen as Kriss Wilkes juggled Leon Brennan’s pass, but managed to retain the ball and scored in the corner.
Jono Smith and Rob Massam then exchanged several passes and cut through the Hornets defence. Smith passed to Hulme who finished off what was arguably the try of the afternoon. Kinsey finished off the scoring, as he gathered a neat Danny Hulme chip kick into the corner and touched down.

Joel Tomkins scored two tries on his Saracens debut as a dominant second-half performance saw the hosts secure a 41-14 LV= Cup win over Worcester at Vicarage Road.

However, the result is not enough to keep the club's hopes in the competition alive as Bath continue to control things at the top of Pool One.

Tomkins, making his first appearance since switching from rugby league, crossed twice after the break and Nils Mordt kicked 16 points as Sarries, who had been trailing for 55 minutes, turned the tables on the visitors.

A Saracens line-up that combined World Cup-winning captain John Smit, Heineken Cup winning scrum-half Peter Stringer with a number of younger prospects, struggled to click in the early stages.

Worcester took the lead in the fourth minute when two drives caught Saracens loose in their 22, and flnaker Sam Betty emerged behind the home defence and dived over, with Joe Carlisle adding the conversion

Stringer was involved twice as Saracens launched their first serious attack and the Warriors were forced to offend on their line to prevent a try, leaving Mordt to kick the penalty.

Attack

The South African fly-half struck again five minutes later as another Saracens attack was halted when Worcester were penalised for offside, and Mordt's close-range goal reduced the deficit to one point.

However, Tom Arscott quickly increased the gap on 16 minutes, cleverly gathering a bouncing ball out on the right before racing ahead and holding off Michael Tagicakibau for a score which was converted by Carlisle.

Tomkins looked eager to be involved on his first-team debut, but most of his early duties consisted of defence and support as the centre saw little ball during the opening quarter.

Saracens scored their first try of the match in the 25th minute when Mordt kicked a penalty to touch, Jamie George's throw to the back was caught and thrown down by Eoin Sherriff and from the drive, Stringer grabbed the ball from the back and sped over the try-line.

Mordt kicked the extra points to ensure that the defending Aviva Premiership champions were just 14-13 behind at the half-time break.

Miss

Mordt missed a penalty that would have put the home side ahead in the 55th minute but Saracens continued to press and eventually Worcester cracked.

Stringer's pass sent James Cleverly driving for the line, and when he was stopped the ball reached Justin Melck who touched down for the score, with Mordt kicking the conversion.

Tomkins scored his first try in Sarries colours on 61 minutes when he intercepted a pass from Danny Gray before speeding clear of the cover to score under the posts.

Just as the cheers had died down, Jackson Wray linked superbly with Tomkins on the left, sending the debutant racing in for his second try in the 65th minute, with Mordt's conversion bouncing in off the near upright.

Jamie George then crossed the line with four minutes remaining to complete the scoring.

Warrington's three-week training camp in Australia ended with an entertaining 34-28 win over the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Saturday morning.

Coach Tony Smith took his Wolves players on tour as part of their preparations for the Super League season, and they completed them with a six-try win against the Bunnies, who were coached for the first time by former Wigan boss Michael Maguire.

The title-winning coach announced before kick-off that England forward Sam Burgess would be one of five captains he would be using this season - a move that worked well for him at Wigan - with former Warrington centre Matt King another.

A new era or not, though, it was Warrington who struck first, with early tries from Rhys Evans and Simon Grix putting them in charge.

Rhys Williams then made it three tries and Ryan Atkins four, before the NRL side, still over a month away from the start of their season, responded.

Shaune Corrigan was the first over, with more scores following from Brandon McKinnon and Ryan Carr.

Nathan Peats then brought them to within two points at 24-22 and, even though Chris Bridge scored for Warrington, Corrigan's second made it 28-28.

But Gareth O'Brien ensured that Smith's men headed for home on a winning note, scoring the final try with six minutes remaining.

Finally rugby league in London won’t have to put up with its ugly nick name, Harlequins.
Admittedly the change from London to Harlequins in 2006 saved the club from extinction, but the partnership between the league and union clubs didn’t last before Quins RU were happy for the rugby league side to stump up the cash for a tenancy.
But all change is afoot for the new London Broncos rebrand. Originally the same club that changed it’s name six years ago, the rebrand should see London unlock the capital’s fan base from a new prospective. CEO Gus Mackay joined the club at the start of 2011, and has done a fantastic job behind the scenes to put the club into a position where it can generate it’s own brand and identity.
On the field coach Rob Powell will be disappointed with the way his side collapsed after only five games. Having gone into the season as outsiders, nobody expected Quins to reach the dizzy heights of first place after three consecutive wins. Having disposed of Saints, Quins lost to Huddersfield but backed up their loss with a ten point win over Leeds. Therefore when they met title contenders Warrington, an 82-6 loss was far from expected, especially as Quins scored the first try of the game.
It all went downhill for Quins, picking up only three wins in the league and cup thereafter. But the early signs were good, and if Powell can once again unlock the secret that kept the London side in the upper echelons of Super League, they may challenge for a play off spot.
Key man: Craig Gower
A veteran playmaker after having spent a large portion of his playing career with Penrith. He led the Panthers to only their second Premiership win in 2003. He is an influential stand off with years of experience having played in Grand Finals and Kangaroo tours. He left Penrith in 2007 to play rugby union in Italy. Gower qualifies for the Italian side through his grandfather’s heritage, and played for Italy in the Six Nations after signing for French side Aviron Bayonnais. However as his contract expired with the French club, Gower made a return to rugby league with the newly rebranded Broncos.
One-to-watch: Olsi Krasniqi
The son of an Albanian wrestler, Krasniqi is fairly known having made his debut in 2010 against Crusaders. In that 50-22 win he scored a debut try and was a stand out performer on Sky television. Krasniqi is a fiery impact player, and mostly comes off the bench to provide the team with a fresh pair of powerful legs. He is defiantly a player to watch in the future as he tries to establish himself in the squad.
Transfers In: Mark Bryant (Crusaders RL), Liam Colbon (Hull KR), Matt Cook (Hull KR), Craig Gower (Bayonne RU), Jarrad Hickey (Wakefield), Antonio Kaufusi (Newcastle), Julien Rinaldi (Wakefield), Michael Robertson (Manly), Shane Rodney (Manly), Michael Witt (Crusaders RL)
Transfers Out: Luke Gale (Bradford), Andy Ellis (Wakefield), Oliver Wilkes (Wakefield), Nick Kouparitsas (Released), Rob Purdham (Retired), Luke Ambler (Leeds, loan spell), Danny Ward (Released), David Williams (Released), Mark Calderwod (Released), Jack Latus (Released), Karl Pryce (Released), Mark Burnett (Hull FC)
Prediction: Craig Gower could lead them to challenge for a play off place but will fall short, 11th.
Super League Grand Final Odds: 80/1 (12th)
League Leaders Odds: 100/1 (12th)

Finally rugby league in London won’t have to put up with its ugly nick name, Harlequins.
Admittedly the change from London to Harlequins in 2006 saved the club from extinction, but the partnership between the league and union clubs didn’t last before Quins RU were happy for the rugby league side to stump up the cash for a tenancy.

FORMER Roosters and Warrington captain Adrian Morley expects the NRL see an influx of Super League stars join the likes of Sam Burgess and Gareth Ellis in coming years.

With the expected rise in the NRL salary cap and England’s dwindling exchange rate, Morley believes the tables will turn with the flood of Australian talent joining English clubs to flip.

“I think (the global financial crisis) has an effect on how lucrative it would be for Australians to come over,” Morley told 2KY.

“In years gone by its very appealing but that’s stopped.

“I think we’ll see the opposite, there’s more English lads playing in the NRL now than there’s ever been and I think you’ll see that increase over the next few years as well.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if people like Tom Bricsoe the young Hull winger who was an international I think he will probably try his hand at the NRL,” said the 34-year-old.

“I think Sam Tomkins when he comes to the end of his deal he wants to come over here.

“It’s so appealing with the exchange rate and that sort of thing then you’ll see an invasion of Pommys.”

22-year-old Tomkins is contracted with Wigan for another three seasons before he can begin negotiations for a new deal.

The utility half-fullback was earlier sought out by NRL club Cronulla along with Rugby Union clubs.

“He’s a very good player, very sought after,” Morley said.

“I think Rugby Union were sniffing on him for a while.

“Everyone wants a piece of him.”

Morley said that former Canberra centre Joel Monaghan is likely to be ruled out of Saturday’s return to Redfern clash with South Sydney having been battling with a knee complaint.

London Broncos will play one of their Stobart Super League matches in Kent as part of their efforts to spread the game and find a new home.

The Broncos have announced their home match against Hull on Sunday, May 20, will be held at Priestfield Stadium - home of Football League Two club Gillingham.

It will be the Londoners' second "on-the-road" fixture following the decision to switch the Bradford game on May 6 to Leyton Orient's Brisbane Road.

Broncos chief executive Gus Mackay said: "This is an exciting opportunity to take the game to a new audience, meeting our strategic objective of growing the game across London and the south-east.

Support

"We very much hope the local community will come out in support of the event and we're already looking forward to the match."

Securing a home for the team beyond the end of 2012 is currently the club's most pressing priority - with their current deal to play at the Twickenham Stoop running out this year and Mackay has not ruled out seeking to use the Olympic Stadium.

Professional rugby league was played in Kent in 1983 when Kent Invicta shared London Road with Maidstone FC, although they lasted only one season before moving to Southend and then folding.

Gillingham's commercial director Steve Lowe said: "It's great to be working with the London Broncos to bring another professional sport to Kent, particularly just as the football season will be drawing to a close.

"I hope that the people of Kent come out and support us bringing Super League rugby to the county.

"It should be a great sporting occasion and will showcase rugby league to all those that follow it on TV, play it and read about it."
